Name that Zune

It’s not a like you could ignore the unveiling of this Microsoft initiative. CNET and Engadget had lots of details and Om Malik, Paid Content and TechCrunch provided analysis- the short version : tough battle with Apple ahead, microsoft music partners are fscked and this an opportunity for a truly open alternative to this formin duopoly).

That answer could come from the Y company, now sitting between Microsoft X and Z product. Some say it’s an opportunity to do security right, others that wifi is what’s different, the name sucks, marketing sucks but hey, there is an insider blog, too. Follow the buzz!

My take? It’s from one of MS most efficient lead (Allard) and could open the door to gaming crossover (and XBOX live experience, one of the most interesting social network around). So it’s a new platform. From a company that understands platforms. But also from a company that we all know can kill good projects either from the fear the market can have from it or from overmanagement/overcomplexity.

It’s about time Apple got real competition in the iMusic market (tune/pod). But it might not come from MS, but from the side effect that this move will provoke. Convergence is a dirty word, I much prefer interop
