Social is a function, not a destination

Read/Write Web reports about Reddit being used as a white label solution for Slate. It has always mystified me why most people developping new web projects don't understand that there will not be another MySpace or Digg or YouTube. There can be only one leader (it’s a consequence of the network effect). But the ideas put forth by these services make for a plethora of options when you build a new site.

This is what I am doing in one of my current projects for Cossette/Fjord. Taking the features from MySpace and YouTube and building a service around a community with a defined focus… This is not new thinking at all. What’s new (for some) is the fact that this userdata will have to interop between those destinations sites, not be stucked in silos. This is where it gets interesting!
